When I got a new used notebook off an online auction site, it didn't feature a hard drive. In my search for a laptop HD, I learned one way to make a hard drive originally from compact flash memory.

I bought a bootable CF to 2" IDE Adapter. That adapter enables you to work with a compact flash card as the main hard drive.

The adapter connects to 44-pin connector for most laptops. I've observed that some notebook computer connectors use a pin hole in the middle blocked, making the adapter not match. I just imagine you could snip over pin or bend it backside on the adapter and it have to match, but I have not tested out it personally.

You can boot on every OS from a CF cards applying this type of adapter. I recommend using Windows 98 as the os. Windows XP makes just too many read/write cycles which will shorten living period of the memory card. Windows XP usually requires not less than 3 GB to install. Windows 98 just
uses a minimum of 256 MB to run.

It is actually possible use Windows XP as the os. I would up grade into a microdrive. But keep in mind, setting up Windows XP the normal way, it will get stuck in a endless loop. There's a key to get it to setup effectively, but I've not have worked it out yet. I imagine it is need files transferred from your typical laptop hard drive.

The best advantages to selecting a CF card as a hard drive often in case your laptop gets dropped, the memory is more likely to survive the drop than a standard harddisk.

The new mini notebook computers work with a similar set up that is called a Solid State Drive (SSD).

I use this adapter including a 2 GB card for the laptop. It works very well using Windows 98 and I have added in a Wi-Fi card for World-wide-web connection.
