A Young Gentleman Needs Treatment For His Severe Depression, Relationship Issues, And For His Drug Addiction And Alcoholism

Nearly eight months ago I had dinner with a thirty-nine-year-old man named Benjamin who experiences intense depression, has relationship problems, and who is drug and alcohol dependent. As affirmed by Benjamin, it is his alcoholism and drug addiction and his acute depression that has had the most to do with his unceasing relationship issues.

As articulated by Benjamin, he is so dejected by his relationship difficulties and by both of his medical problems that he essentially has little or no reason to achieve much of anything. What is particularly unfortunate about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin finished three semesters of graduate school in entrepreneurship.

Benjamin's situation makes me wonder if he is an illustration of an individual who can look within and see his drinking problems and drug addiction and do something healthy about these problems. Or, on the other hand, if he is an individual who has to hit rock-bottom before he gets addiction rehabilitation that results in long lasting sobriety.

It may be asked how counseling would help his alcohol and drug addiction. First of all, there are a number of newly created physician-prescribed meds that can help Benjamin avoid a drug and an alcohol drug relapse, help him through the drug and alcohol detoxification process, and help him through his withdrawal symptoms. Second, in rehab he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the different stages of alcoholism.

Third, Benjamin would learn to acknowledge the fact that there is entirely nothing productive about drug abuse and careless drinking. In a similar way, he would also learn that messing around with one or both of these unhealthy circumstances is the road to shattered relationships, poor work and school performance, financial difficulties, deteriorating health, legal problems, and a premature death. Fourth, counseling for his relationship difficulties and his depression might help him manage these medical problems more effectively and help create less of a need for him to engage in additive behavior. And finally, in therapy he could also learn more about the diverse symptoms of alcoholism that he has exhibited.

Since Benjamin doesn't have the willpower to accomplish much of anything in his life, it is obvious that he definitely needs a little hope for a more productive existence. And the sad thing is that hope is all around Benjamin if he could only get to the place in life to get the therapy he needs for his mental illness and drug dependence and alcohol addiction and continue with his treatment routine.

Benjamin is clearly too young to be overwhelmed in life. He doesn't understand this at this time in his life but if he can learn how to refrin from alcohol and drugs via alcohol and drug rehabilitation and get the counseling he requires for his extreme depression, he can turn his life around and begin living with self-respect, passion, and direction.

Better relationships, positive change, self respect, and a meaningful life are clearly a reality for Benjamin. But only if he can become inspired to seek the medical rehabilitation he requires, follow through with his treatment regimen, live his life in a dependency-free and healthy manner, and learn how to acquire a more positive attitude about his existence.
